What is the TVA EnergyRight heat pump water heater offer?
TVA EnergyRight and local power companies take $900 off a qualifying ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater, applied as a retail coupon at participating retailers (TVA EnergyRight). The page, last modified on 19 October 2026, limits the offer to two units per address and requires that a TVA local power company serves the home. It shows no end date, so check the page again on the day you buy.
Does a Clarksville house qualify?
Most likely, if the electric bill comes from CDE Lightband or Cumberland Electric Membership Corporation (CEMC), but confirm your own utility on the EnergyRight page before you shop. CEMC describes itself as a TVA local power company. The line between CDE and CEMC territory is not published, so read the name on your bill rather than going by your ZIP code. Our gas and electric rates page compares the two utilities' current charges.
How much does a heat pump water heater save?
ENERGY STAR puts the saving at about 3,760 kWh and $550 a year for a household of four, compared with a standard electric tank (ENERGY STAR). That dollar figure assumes 14.6¢ per kWh, a national price. Electricity is cheaper here: CDE Lightband's November 2026 energy charge is $0.11010 per kWh (CDE Lightband), so the same 3,760 kWh is worth about $414 by our arithmetic.
On CEMC's October 2026 energy and fuel charges, which add to $0.10239 per kWh (CEMC), four people would save about $385. The kilowatt-hours saved do not change with the price.
Why does a heat pump use so much less?
It moves heat instead of making it. The Department of Energy says these heaters pull warmth from the surrounding air and pass it into the tank, which makes them two to three times as efficient as an ordinary electric resistance tank (DOE Energy Saver, archived copy of 5 June 2026). On the federal test pattern, a unit at the ENERGY STAR floor efficiency needs about 984 kWh a year, against 3,528 kWh for a minimum-standard electric tank. Our running cost page shows that sum.

Where can a heat pump water heater go in the house?
It needs a room that stays between 40°F and 90°F all year with about 1,000 cubic feet of air around it, according to ENERGY STAR's product page (ENERGY STAR). The unit cools the space it sits in, which helps in a humid Clarksville summer. In cold settings it may fall back on its built-in electric elements for a while, which raises winter use. An unheated garage is a doubtful fit in a month like January, when the average low at Clarksville's NOAA station is 27.8°F; our freeze nights page has the monthly numbers. ENERGY STAR suggests a space with spare heat, such as a furnace room, where one is available.
The ENERGY STAR clip above quotes a national saving of about $300 a year from 2018; the Clarksville figures on this page are worked separately from current local rates.
How long does the saving take to pay back?
ENERGY STAR estimates about 2.7 years for four people, 3.7 for three and 5.5 for two. Those paybacks assume an extra purchase cost of $1,503 over a standard tank and a 13-year life. If the $900 EnergyRight coupon applies, that gap falls to $603 by our arithmetic, and at CDE's rate a family of four would recover it in about a year and a half. Installation work, any electrical changes and permit fees are not in those numbers.
Who should install one?
A licensed plumber, and an electrician if the circuit needs changes. Inside the City of Clarksville, homeowners may not pull plumbing permits, so the contractor does. In unincorporated Montgomery County a homeowner may pull a plumbing permit, and the county lists a $50 fee for a water heater change-out with no effective date shown. County houses on Clarksville Gas & Water water or gas are the exception: their plumbing permit comes from City Building & Codes. Confirm with the permit office before the old tank comes out; the permits and licenses page has the details. ENERGY STAR also notes these units may need yearly upkeep, including changing air filters, so keep the maker's manual with the heater.
Behind these numbers
The savings here start from ENERGY STAR's national household estimates and are repriced at CDE's November 2026 and CEMC's October 2026 energy charges, both checked on 6 November 2026. They are estimates for typical families, not readings from Clarksville homes. The EnergyRight terms were read the same day; the program can change or end without notice on that page. We could not confirm from a published map which streets CDE serves, so the utility check is left to you.
Questions people ask
Can one address use the $900 EnergyRight discount twice?
Yes, the offer allows up to two qualifying units per address. Both must be ENERGY STAR certified heat pump models bought at participating retailers.
Does a heat pump water heater work through a Clarksville winter?
Yes, if it sits in a space that stays above 40°F. In a cold space it leans on its electric back-up elements more, which cuts the saving in the coldest months.
Will a heat pump water heater make my basement cooler?
It takes heat from the air around it, so the room gets cooler and drier while it runs. ENERGY STAR notes that this cooling and drying can help during hot, humid months.
Is the saving worth it for a household of two?
ENERGY STAR estimates 1,880 kWh a year for two people, about $207 at CDE's energy rate by our arithmetic. Its payback estimate for two is 5.5 years before any discount.
Does a heat pump water heater still need draining and flushing?
Follow the maker's manual for your model. Tank sediment builds up in any storage heater, and our flushing page covers the routine for electric tanks.
