This page explains what happens when you read the site, and what changes if you play a video or follow a link out.

What the site does not do

There is nothing to sign up for and nothing to fill in. The site has no accounts, no contact or comment forms, and no newsletter. It runs no analytics, advertising or tracking scripts, and the site itself sets no cookies in your browser.

Typefaces and pictures

The typefaces are served from this site's own address, not loaded from an outside font service, and so are the site's pictures.

Videos

Some pages show a video from YouTube. Each one is click-to-load: the YouTube player is not started until you press play. When you do, the video loads from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube's privacy-enhanced embed, and only from that point do YouTube's own terms and privacy policy apply to it.

Links to other sites

Pages link to utilities, government agencies, appliance makers and a few businesses run by the same team as this site. Following any of those links takes you off this site, and the site you arrive at has its own privacy practices.

Server records

Like any website, the server that delivers these pages may keep routine technical logs, such as the address a request came from, to keep the service running and secure.

Changes

If anything on this page changes, the page will be updated with the new practice. More about the site is on the about page, and the sources behind every figure are on the methods page.
